Sunday was the Big Run - 13.1 miles. My first race of greater than 10K in 4 years and Bryan's first race of greater than 10K ever. Together, we had a major goal going into the race: finish as a couple (meaning if one of us collapsed, the other was responsible for getting the body across the finish). Then we set our individual goals: I wanted us to finish in under two and a half hours (splitting between running and walking) and Bryan's goal was to not die.
It's interesting how little things speak volumes about relationships. Bryan has never really liked running. He does some of it at the gym for cardiovascular health, but overall would prefer to just bang out 20 minutes on an elliptical. About two years ago, he started running 5K's with me because he knew I liked them. The discussion about taking on an endurance event like a half-marathon became a reality and he trained really diligently for it (honestly, better than I did!). I was really proud of him on Sunday when - my legs were killing me, and seriously considering detaching themselves from my body - he kept on encouraging me. He chatted with me throughout the race and I don't even think I felt the first 7 miles (mile 11 is when my legs were starting to plot a coup). Despite the winds, some rain, and lots of hills, we finished together in 2:25, and Bryan is still alive and well. I am already plotting my next half-marathon in October. I figure that should keep me moving and in good shape leading up to the wedding.
Needless to say, most of the weekend was spent sleeping both before and after the race. And, of course, I continued to be subjected to long hours of basketball - I'm sorry, but once Villanova lost, my interest (and the rank of brackets) plummeted. I am still rooting for Syracuse, however, because Bryan loves them and they wear orange - my favorite color.
On the agenda this week has been preparing for Soon-to-be-Mrs. Melton's (otherwise known as Megan Greene) wedding which is coming up in April. I visited a highly recommended seamstress today, otherwise known as a Tomboy's Dream Seamstress, due to the fact that I was in and out of her shop in minutes. (This is wonderful - provided the dress fits when I get it back; note to Megan: I'm sure it will fit, it will be fine!!).
Bryan and I are still hard at work considering invitations. We have been mainly looking online due to our not-so-great in-store experience a week and a half ago. There is another shop in Duluth I would like to check into this weekend if we have the time. Seeing as they are closed on Sundays, we're going to have to squeeze it in on Saturday after I'm finished work.
M.O.H. Nicole and I will be taking one for the team and tasting all kind of cakes this weekend at Celso's. It's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it. Bryan's major task for the week is to fax our signed contract back to the Homewood Suites...I'm predicting this will be done sometime around Friday. Once the website is set up through them for guests to start booking, you'll read it here first.
Finally, I am back to kickboxing this week beginning Friday. I can't wait! But for now I am going to try to rescue my still-crying quads with a light workout as I watch 'King of Queens' - there is no better show to watch while on the treadmill, in my opinion, plus I just love that Kevin James.
I have to do something to get out of this apartment aside from the 3000 errands I ran today. I have 40-cloves-of-garlic-chicken in the crockpot right now and it smells INCREDIBLE (although I got sick of peeling garlic, so it turned into 27-cloves-of-garlic-chicken). I think I'm seriously in love with cooking in the crock pot. We just need a bigger one!!!! (Yes, that is my subtle gift registry plug for the day). I got a little crazy and am cooking with bone-in and skin-on chicken. I've heard that this increases the moisture quotient of the meat. Plus, it was cool to tuck the garlic under the skin, I hope it really intensifies the flavor (and yes, I am aware that I may smell like a head of garlic for the next 3 days). Bryan is working later tonight, so I'm going to have to control myself so I don't end up digging into it before he gets home.
Ok, I'm going to quit obsessing about the chicken and head to the gym! Check back through the weekend for my review of our cake-tasting experience and hopefully successful (and I'm sure monogram-centric) invitation search!
