After racing the Snowicane to Philadelphia on Wednesday night (and ultimately, winning), my Mom, Aunt Claire, M.O.H. Nicole, and I decided to get a head start on our wedding dress shopping excursion Thursday evening.
The first (and only) stop of the Thursday evening trip was David's Bridal. Now for all of you that LOVE David's, that swear by it, that think it's the only place in the world to get a dress...brace yourself. I am going to tell you what I loved about the experience and what I didn't like. I will begin by saying overall the experience was positive.
I had requested a 6 0'clock appointment and was told they had a 6:30 appointment available, but I could come early, it was no big deal. We ended up arriving around 6:15. They gave me a catalog book to look at and told me to turn the corner of the pages to mark which dresses I liked. Eventually I saw in this book what would become "The Dress of the Night" and the leading contender at this point and just blatantly ripped the page out. The woman who checked me in said, "well, she's gonna go through the book with you...you can just turn the corners". I was like, "Whatever, lady, THIS is my dress".
My Mom began to take pictures of us looking at the book of dresses, standing near dresses, looking at dresses on the racks during the time we were waiting (these pictures will be posted when I get them from my Mom's camera). And the minutes....they were a-ticking. Sure, I understand that I was anxious, it was my first time dress shopping and I wanted to get to it!! But, 6:30 came. 6:35...so what could we do? We started pulling dresses from the racks which is apparently a HUGE NO-NO.
An employee came over to tell us not to do this and that the consultant would do it. Yes, I was also told the consultant would go through the book with me (never happened) and was told the consultant was an actual person and not invisible, so where was she? "She just got here, so she's in the back getting herself together and taking a breather" was the response. A breather? If she just got here, what is she taking a breather from? Did she drive here from Montana? I JUST WANNA TRY ON DRESSES, WHY ARE YOU PREVENTING ME FROM THIS?!?
Ok, I didn't go psycho, but I was antsy and ready to go. Plus, I had shaved my legs and worn granny panties for this consultant!!!
She made an appearance and apologized, telling me she had come from her daytime job. Well, I can understand that, so all was right with the world...provided I'm getting to try on dresses now. And I was!!!
Let me just say this - Trying on wedding dresses does not get tiring. I must've tried on 20 dresses, then tried some on again. The only thing that did get tiring? Playing with this bra-like contraption that is supposed to give me "lift" and "smooth" my tummy. That thing is uncomfortable and I have no intention of wearing one. I don't typically worry too much about saggage (as there's not much to worry about) and my bumpy tummy is fine, thank you. Half the time the contraption moved if I moved and I had a bra cup in the middle of my chest...not attractive. Eventually, I got hungry and we called it a night.
In sum, what I liked about David's was that the selection was good (I tried on everything from strapless and slinky to halter-style and poufy) and the prices aren't extraordinarily terrifying. Overall, the service would get a C from me. My consultant did a pretty good job, she was extremely patient with me and had to look at my (evidently?) bumpy body. The accessorizing part didn't go as smoothly as I would've hoped when we needed a veil here, a necklace there, but she worked hard and there was no wavering on our choice of "The Dress of the Night".
This is obviously a three-day process for me at this point. Phase one is complete. I fell in love with a dress and am quite confident that that's the dress (yes, it was the one I pulled out of the book). Phase two is today, we'll be checking out Betty's Bridal in Clifton Heights. I am mainly going to see if anything can get my mind off of the other dress, if I'll have a wandering eye at all. Honestly, this whole "selecting a dress" process is alot like dating, and I mean that in the best way possible...although I'll try not to get drunk and spill a drink on any dresses...not that I ever did that when I was dating...no....
Phase three will be tomorrow following my Science Fair judging-assignment. But instead of focusing on my wedding dress needs, we will be checking out the bridesmaid dress selections on Bridesmaids Mrs. Smith and Melissa. Everyone enjoy the Snowicane coverage on the major weather outlets...I'm still on a mission!
